In the context of digitalization and the continuous quest for operational excellence in industry, it is crucial to examine tools that offer an in-depth insight into production and information flows from various viewpoints. This study investigates the relative use of the Shingo 4.0 - Material and Information Flow (MIF) model alongside Value Stream Mapping 4.0 (VSM 4.0) to highlight their shared features, distinctions, and supportive functions in examining production and information processes. The research took place in the textile sector. Employing a case study approach, the study presents quantitative data collection. The research analyzed how each instrument understands operational dynamics and information transfer. The Shingo 4.0 - MIF model facilitated a clear separation between process and operational activities, providing an in-depth illustration of both human and physical flows. In contrast, VSM 4.0 provided insights into digital maturity, especially regarding information access, system integration, and efficient data use. Results indicated that although both tools are based on lean thinking, they provide different analytical viewpoints. The Shingo 4.0 - MIF emphasizes improving insight into spatial and operational movements, while VSM 4.0 excels at revealing informational shortcomings and pointing out gaps in digitalization. The study illustrates that the combined use of the Shingo 4.0 - MIF and VSM 4.0 creates a strong foundation for assessing existing operational and informational methods. This dual-tool method enhances strategic decision-making and ongoing improvement in production settings experiencing digitalization, especially those marked by complexity and variability.
