Call for papers: Creative Industries, Acceleration and Mental Health
Guest Editor: Prof. Dr. Michelle Prazeres
Editor-in-Chief: Prof. Dr. Vanessa Amalia Dalpizol Valiati
The field of creative industries is often linked to change, experimentation, and the promotion of innovation-based work. Like other areas of social practice, the growth of creative economies occurs within a context shaped by rapid digitalisation and platformisation of life, as well as the acceleration of social dynamics.
In recent decades, the speed of information flow in the production and circulation of content has increased even more. The social acceleration of time and the 24/7 temporal regimes create a scenario that imposes new rhythms on creative work: increased frequency, continuous demands for updates, changes in financing and monetisation arrangements, permanent (and constantly shifting) demands for metrics and engagement, hyperconnectivity, and precarious labour conditions.
Against this backdrop, this special issue aims to gather contributions that explore the relationships between creative industries, the social acceleration of time, and mental health. It examines both the challenges and opportunities for transforming professional, organisational, and cultural practices in this area. We are keen to reflect on how accelerated temporal regimes, productivist cultures, and visibility and performance dynamics influence those who work in or engage with contemporary creative production.
In light of this, we welcome theoretical, empirical, and methodological articles addressing or related to, among other themes, the following:
• Temporal regimes and acceleration in the creative industries;
• Platformisation of creative work;
• Metrics and algorithmic governance;
• Mental health and precarious labour in creative sectors;
• Inequalities in the creative field;
• Public policies and regulation of the creative industries;
• Practices of resistance, care, and deceleration;
• Methodological approaches to the study of creative work in digital contexts.
