Abstract

The relevance of investigating the experiences of childfree women is highlighted by the permanence of social expectations around motherhood, despite the increase in the option of not having children. The importance of understanding what has been investigated in the national and international scenarios is attested, in order to highlight the advances in the area and the aspects that should guide the next investigations. Thus, this work aims to present a systematic review of the national and international literature about the experience of women who chose not to have children. The international database PsycInfo was used, using the descriptors: “Childfree”, “Childless by choice”, “Voluntary childless”. And the national databases Lilacs, Scielo and Pepsic, using the descriptor: “non-maternity”. Empirical articles published between 2010 and 2020 in English, Portuguese and Spanish were included. A total of 14 articles were selected for this review. This is a qualitative research about the experience of these women, which focuses on the motivations, the decision process, the perception of motherhood and the repercussions of this choice on the relationships. International studies have shown theoretical and methodological tendencies that are not used in the national context, such as the detailed description of the participants and the use of gender and sexuality theories. Therefore, it is important to carry out more studies, especially in the Brazilian context, considering the scarcity of national literature on this phenomenon. The importance of using certain trends proposed by international studies is highlighted, as they represent a complexification of studies in this area.
