ABSTRACT
In this work, the production of biofuels through pyrolysis of algae biomass obtained from high rate algae pond treating sewage was evaluated. The two high-rate algae ponds (HRAP) were built and operated at Wastewater Treatment Plant São João Navegantes. The HRAP A, was fed with raw sewage, while the HRAP B was fed with effluent from an UASB reactor. The HRAP B provided higher productivity, presenting total solids concentration of 487.3mg/l and chlorophyll a of 7735μg/l. The algal productivity, in the average depth was measured as 41,8 gm-2day-1 for pond A and as 47.1 gm-2day-1 for pond B. Algae obtained from the HRAP B were separated through the process of coagulation/flocculation. In the presence of alum, separation efficiency in the range of 97% solids removal was obtained. After centrifugation, the biomass was dried and comminuted. The experiments for biofuel production were conducted via pyrolysis, in batches, in a tubular quartz glass reactor inserted in a furnace for external heat. The tests were carried out under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, at a flow rate of 60ml/min. In order to determine the influence of temperature on fractions yields obtained, the system was operated at 400°C, 500°C and 600°C. The studies showed that the pyrolysis products yield was influenced by the temperature, with yields higher than 50% for solid phase and 15% for gas phase at 400°C and higher than 45% for liquid phase (bio-oil and water) at 500°C.
